Get the Most Out of Your Shoot

Hair: Don’t do anything drastic to your hair the in the days prior to the shoot (eg. trying out new hair dyes or haircut, etc.). Decide on a hair style before the day of the shoot so you can perfect how to style it that day.

Skin Care: Exfoliate and moisturize skin (especially on the face) in the day(s) leading up to the shoot. For the photos, light, natural make-up application is good, but make sure it is the right color for your skin. Also, don’t try out new products within days of the shoot, as allergic reactions could occur. Bring lip balm and/or lipstick/lip gloss. Lip balm can also be good for guys.

Nails: If you wear nail polish, make sure it’s relatively neutral and that you freshen it up on the morning of the shoot.

Clothes: Plan out your clothes and iron the night before, and make sure clothes are lint/hair free at start of shoot. When deciding what to wear, think about the dominant background colors in the photos (i.e. nature has a lot of green), and remember that for solid colors and earthy tones are usually the best – though if you usually wear bright colors and want to, remember that darker shades are less distracting from your face. If possible, have a few outfits selected and prepared, just in case. And lastly, pick clothes that are flattering to your body type, and make sure you are comfortable in the outfits you choose. If you are not comfortable in your clothes, it will be a lot harder to look comfortable and confident in you photos.

Posing and Expressions: In order to feel most comfortable and confident in front of the camera, it’s a good idea to find inspiration for posing and expressions by searching online (good places would be Pinterest, Google Image Search, Youtube, or your favorite magazines) and then practicing them in front of a mirror.

For Guys: If you have facial hair, make sure it is well-groomed, and if not freshly shaven, with a new blade, shaving cream and moisturizing aftershave to avoid bumps.

Teeth & Food: Brush your teeth and floss prior to the photoshoot. Don’t eat anything that has a lot of dyes, as it could leave undesirable colors in your mouth and lips. Also, make sure to stay hydrated and avoid as much salty foods (they can make one bloated by storing extra water) and alcohol (red eyes) leading up to the shoot.

Get lots of sleep: You want to look energized and avoid dark circles under the eyes, so try to get a lot of rest leading up to the photo shoot. If you’re particularly stressed out, try camomile tea, yoga, or other natural relaxation techniques.
