As you may or may not know, I volunteer with a non-profit organization called Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership. I normally work with the New York East chapter, but this year I am proud to announce, that I will serve as the official Director of Photography for a brand new, national program that HOBY is launching, the Advanced Leadership Academy (ALA).
Typical HOBY seminars are geared toward high school sophomores, but the ALA, which will take place in the end of February/beginning of March 2013 in North East, MD, is specifically for high school juniors and seniors, HOBY alumni or not. That’s right, so even if you/your friend did not get the chance to go to HOBY as a sophomore, you can now go as a junior or senior.
HOBY seminars teach students about volunteerism and getting involved in the community. They empower kids to help out and get out of their comfort zones, to learn how to be more confident and find their passion.
I’m particularly excited for this role because I will once again be combining my passions: photography and HOBY, for the greater good. I have a lot of faith that this program is going to be really great because there will be some people that already know about HOBY mixed with some that don’t, so it will be an interesting mix.
I’m excited to give back to HOBY on a national scale because, even though I’ve never attended a national HOBY seminar, the local and state seminars I attended in high school had a huge impact on my life and I hope that my work with HOBY can inspire someone the way I was inspired as a sophomore.
